Public transport plays an essential part in all the events of city life, from the happiest to the gloomiest. During the 1914-1918 war, many of those employed by the CGO and the CMP (“Compagnie du Métropolitain de Paris” and “Compagnie Générale des Omnibus” – ancestors of the RATP),mobilised along with so many others, lost their lives on the field of honour. All CGO buses were requisitioned by the military authorities on 1 August 1914. Some took part in the Battles of the Marne and the Somme as well as in the Verdun offensive. The central workshop in rue Championnet in Paris, which was responsible for maintaining the buses, was turned into a war factory and produced munitions throughout the conflict. It is little wonder, therefore, that the RATP wished to support the creation of the Musée de la Grande Guerre, symbol of the duty of memory.
