At the feet of the American Monument, the huge cantilevered building seems to be thrusting itself forward, clear of the hillside it stands on.

Designed by architect Christophe Lab, the 7000-m² building is determinedly horizontal, in counterpoint to the towering American Monument nearby – an edifice devoted to History in constant dialogue with a place of Memory. The new building meets all the requirements of a 21st-century museum, both with regard to its design, which take full account of the environment, and to best use and conservation of its collections.

The museum is on 3 levels, and is organised as follows :

  • Ground floor: cafe, auditorium, left luggage office and toilets
  • First floor: permanent exhibition, temporary exhibition, shop, ticket-office, documentation centre, educational rooms, administrative offices and reserve collections
  • Finally, the landscaped roof-terrace, providing 360° panoramic views.
