AN ATTRACTIVE CULTURAL SPONSORSHIP POLICY

FROM THE VERY BEGINNING OF THE PROJECT, THE AGGLOMERATION COMMUNITY OF PAYS DE MEAUX SOUGHT TO ATTRACT SPONSORS AND OTHER PARTNERS IN ORDER TO MAKE THE MUSEUM A COLLECTIVE UNDERTAKING, IMBUED WITH REAL MEANING AND TRUE VALUES AND A LEVER FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF A TERRITORY IN THE MIDST OF CHANGE.

Companies, local, national and international alike, have answered the call alongside a plethora of household-name institutions – many are those who have come forward to associate themselves with a project that has no parallel anywhere in Europe, so participating in the Museum de la Grande Guerre’s international reputation. Although developing a cultural sponsorship policy is no easy matter, that implemented by the Musée de la Grande Guerre is clear proof that an audacious project based on the safekeeping and enhancement of a unique heritage has extraordinary drawing power; today, over thirty sponsors lend their support to the museum.

The First World War has been overshadowed by the traumatism of the Second. Few great novels, except for “Le Feu” on the French side and “In Stahlgewittern” on the German; few great films; few epic poems. And yet the event gave birth to the 20th century, bringing with it the seeds of brutality, force, excess and unreason. From whence the historical obligation to revive the memory of what took place and how it traumatised soldiers and civilian populations alike. And that is exactly what the Musée de la Grande Guerre is designed to do, the result of a truly outstanding collection, fruit of the enthusiasm and overwhelming passion of one man, Jean-Pierre Verney, and the intuition shown by Jean-François Copé, who had the intelligence to preempt its acquisition. Once this decisive step had been taken, construction of the museum was a collective effort, and I am delighted that sponsorship has played a part in proceedings – and no less so to see that a sense of the general interest is not lacking in companies today."
