FAMILY AREA: WELCOME TO THE CANTONMENT
Come with the family and spend some time exploring this new area !
In 1914-18, after spending a period of whatever length on the front line, soldiers benefited from a rest in the cantonment areas. Use this time for reading, writing, trying on uniforms, having your photo taken, and looking at parcels from the period!
The idea is to have fun finding out things with the family.
Play an active part in your visit!
Postal comfort
In the cantonment, soldiers received parcels from their loved ones. During the four years of fighting, enormous numbers of objects were sent: around 10 billion in 1918!
Through these eye-witness letters, as well as the use of smells, find out what went into the parcels that the soldiers received!
I am writing to you from the front...
"As soon as I had a moment's leisure time, I took up my notebook to write down my observations. I wrote in the line, I wrote when resting, I wrote everywhere — my pencil was closer to me than my pistol."
Roland Dorgelès, Les Croix de bois (Wooden Crosses), 1919
Just like the soldiers, the young visitors have the chance to sit at the table and write a postcard to their loved ones. They can then send it, by putting it into the letterbox provided.
Everyone in uniform!
Visitors are invited to experience what it felt like to be a soldier by putting on copies of uniforms available for them: nurses' uniforms, French, British and German uniforms.
Once you have put them on, have your photo taken in a period setting to share the memory of this experience.
The Poilus' (Veterans') Library
When resting, soldiers tried to relax and forget the fighting to come by reading.
Escape for a moment by having a look at the various works available, by the light of contemporary storm lanterns. They are accessible to everyone, from little ones to veterans and senior citizens.
Children's narrative
A space laid out with the support of the Caisse d’Épargne Ile-de-France (Ile-de-France Savings Bank).
